Jira-Smartsheet Integration
Your development team works in Jira, while management uses Smartsheet. The native Jira connector bridges this gap, but it’s part of Smartsheet’s Advance package, allows only one connector workflow per sheet, and doesn’t sync comments or attachments. As a Smartsheet Gold Partner, we build a bidirectional sync using the REST APIs of both products, with flexible field mapping. You stay on Smartsheet, save on the Advance license, and retain control over your data.
The challenge
The Smartsheet Jira Connector is a powerful premium add-on. For teams without an Advance budget, it comes with three known limitations.
Connector in the Advance Package. The native Jira connector is a paid premium add-on that can be purchased à la carte or as part of the Advance Package, and requires at least a Business or Enterprise plan.
One workflow per sheet. By default, only one connector workflow is allowed per sheet, for up to 25 Jira projects, and setup requires a Jira administrator.
No comments, no attachments. The native connector does not sync Jira comments or attachments. Context, which is often contained in comments, remains in Jira.
The solution
n8n connects Jira and Smartsheet directly via their public REST APIs. You determine the field mappings and the direction of the integration.
n8n keeps Jira and Smartsheet in sync in both directions using the public REST APIs of both products. Status changes flow in the direction you specify.
You decide which Jira field maps to which Smartsheet column. There's no need to follow a fixed connector schema—instead, you can map fields using a "Lego-style" approach.
Sync works with EU hosting or self-hosting. You stay on Smartsheet, save on the Advance license, and retain control over your data.
This is how we build
To be honest, the effort lies in setting up the mapping and handling errors, not in the license agreement. That's exactly what we do.
Connect the Jira API and the Smartsheet API
We integrate both systems with n8n via their public REST APIs, using secure authentication and clearly defined access rights.
Map fields
We define the field mapping: Which Jira field corresponds to which Smartsheet column, and in which direction. This also applies to multiple Jira projects.
Bidirectional Synchronization and Error Handling
Synchronization works in both directions, with conflict resolution, retries, and monitoring. If an update fails to occur, the system triggers an alert instead of silently failing.
Expand
Once the first bridge is in place, we'll add more projects, fields, and boards to the sync without incurring any new licensing costs.
