Jira-Smartsheet Integration

Connect Jira and Smartsheet without Advance.

Your development team works in Jira, while management uses Smartsheet. The native Jira connector bridges this gap, but it’s part of Smartsheet’s Advance package, allows only one connector workflow per sheet, and doesn’t sync comments or attachments. As a Smartsheet Gold Partner, we build a bidirectional sync using the REST APIs of both products, with flexible field mapping. You stay on Smartsheet, save on the Advance license, and retain control over your data.

The challenge

The native connector can do a lot, but not everything

The Smartsheet Jira Connector is a powerful premium add-on. For teams without an Advance budget, it comes with three known limitations.

01

Connector in the Advance Package. The native Jira connector is a paid premium add-on that can be purchased à la carte or as part of the Advance Package, and requires at least a Business or Enterprise plan.

02

One workflow per sheet. By default, only one connector workflow is allowed per sheet, for up to 25 Jira projects, and setup requires a Jira administrator.

03

No comments, no attachments. The native connector does not sync Jira comments or attachments. Context, which is often contained in comments, remains in Jira.

The solution

Bidirectional sync via both REST APIs

n8n connects Jira and Smartsheet directly via their public REST APIs. You determine the field mappings and the direction of the integration.

In both directions

n8n keeps Jira and Smartsheet in sync in both directions using the public REST APIs of both products. Status changes flow in the direction you specify.

More about n8n

Free Field Mapping

You decide which Jira field maps to which Smartsheet column. There's no need to follow a fixed connector schema—instead, you can map fields using a "Lego-style" approach.

All Add-on Alternatives

On Smartsheet, without Advance

Sync works with EU hosting or self-hosting. You stay on Smartsheet, save on the Advance license, and retain control over your data.

The Jira-Smartsheet Sync in Action

This is how we build

From Two APIs to Stable Two-Way Sync

To be honest, the effort lies in setting up the mapping and handling errors, not in the license agreement. That's exactly what we do.

  1. 1

Connect the Jira API and the Smartsheet API

We integrate both systems with n8n via their public REST APIs, using secure authentication and clearly defined access rights.

  2. 2

    Map fields

We define the field mapping: Which Jira field corresponds to which Smartsheet column, and in which direction. This also applies to multiple Jira projects.

  3. 3

    Bidirectional Synchronization and Error Handling

Synchronization works in both directions, with conflict resolution, retries, and monitoring. If an update fails to occur, the system triggers an alert instead of silently failing.

  4. 4

    Expand

Once the first bridge is in place, we'll add more projects, fields, and boards to the sync without incurring any new licensing costs.

By the Numbers

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions About the Jira-Smartsheet Integration

The most frequently asked questions about two-way sync between Jira and Smartsheet.

Does the Smartsheet-Jira connector absolutely require the Advance package?
Not necessarily. It’s a paid premium add-on that can be purchased à la carte or as part of the Advance package, and requires at least a Business or Enterprise plan. If you only need the sync feature, you can implement it using n8n and the REST APIs of both products without incurring this add-on fee.
How do I sync Jira and Smartsheet in both directions?
n8n reads data via the Jira REST API and writes data via the Smartsheet API, and vice versa. You define the field mappings and the direction for each field. This allows status changes, due dates, and assignees to flow bidirectionally between the two systems without anyone having to enter data manually.
Why isn't the bidirectional sync updating my Jira?
Common causes include a lack of write permissions for API access in Jira, a field mapping that is one-way only, or a status mapping that does not recognize the target workflow in Jira. We carefully check these specific points during setup and monitoring so that any missing updates become visible rather than failing silently.
How much does the native Smartsheet-Jira connector cost?
The Jira Connector does not have a publicly listed price. It is a paid premium add-on that can be purchased à la carte or as part of the Advance package, and is priced based on a custom quote that depends on the number of users, modules, and contract term. This lack of price transparency is why many teams choose to build the integration using n8n instead.
Does the integration work with Jira Cloud and Jira Data Center?
n8n works via the public Jira REST API. As long as your Jira instance provides an accessible REST API, you can set up the sync. For Jira Data Center instances behind a firewall, we’ll clarify the network connection during the add-on audit—for example, by self-hosting n8n in your environment.

Next step

Jira and Smartsheet are tied, with no clear lead.

In a free add-on audit, we'll clarify your field mappings, the sync direction, and the network connection, and compare the n8n solution with your Advance quote.
