Free AI Courses in 2026: The Best Options from Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Others
Since February 2025, AI training has been mandated by law in the EU. Article 4 of the EU AI Act requires companies to equip their employees with sufficient AI knowledge. The good news is that getting started doesn’t have to cost anything.
Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Cisco, and IBM offer their AI learning paths for free. In addition, there is AI-Campus, a German platform funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research that is used by over 130,000 learners. University-level courses are available on Coursera in free audit mode and at the Hasso Plattner Institute via OpenHPI.
This guide compares the eight most important offerings based on language, duration, certification, and target audience. It also honestly highlights where free courses fall short: when it comes to implementing what you’ve learned in your own company.

Google Cloud Skills Boost

The introductory course “Introduction to Generative AI” lasts one hour, is available in English and German, and concludes with a free certificate. For beginners without a technical background, this is likely the fastest way to gain documented foundational knowledge of AI. Advanced learners will find learning paths on prompt engineering, MLOps, and Google’s Vertex AI platform, which span up to 40 hours.
Google AI Essentials (Coursera)
Through Coursera, Google offers the course “AI Essentials,” which is available for free in audit mode. The course is designed for non-technical professionals who want to use AI in their daily work. Topics include: the fundamentals of generative AI, practical applications of Gemini, and critical thinking when working with AI outputs.
Strengths: Both courses are practical, directly integrated with Google Workspace, and well-structured for self-paced learning. Anyone who works with Gmail, Google Docs, or Google Sheets on a daily basis will benefit directly.

Microsoft Learn is the most comprehensive free AI learning platform on the market. Over 100 hours of content are available for free, ranging from AI fundamentals to Azure OpenAI Service integration.

The learning paths range from “AI for Everyone” (no prior technical knowledge required) to developer tracks for Azure AI services. Of particular relevance to companies in the DACH region: the learning path for Microsoft Copilot, which demonstrates how AI assistance works directly within Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook. AI-900 Certification
The official preparation path for the Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals certification (AI-900) is available completely free of charge on Microsoft Learn. While there is a fee for the exam itself (approx. 165 EUR), the training is free and provides a solid foundation in AI, machine learning, and responsible AI use—three core competencies outlined in the EU AI Act.
Strengths: Microsoft Learn is ideal for companies that already use Microsoft 365. Its direct integration with Copilot and Azure makes the content immediately applicable. LinkedIn Learning offers complementary courses that are also available for free through certain enterprise licenses.

600+ free courses, technically in-depth
AWS Skill Builder is Amazon Web Services' learning platform, offering over 600 free courses, including a specially developed AI fundamentals package. The platform is in English, and the content is consistently well-maintained.
The introductory course “Introduction to Generative AI: Art of the Possible” lasts one hour and concludes with a digital certificate. In addition, there are learning paths on Amazon Bedrock, prompt engineering, and AI security. For tech-focused teams at companies that use AWS, Skill Builder is the logical choice.
Strengths: Technically sound, cloud-focused, and highly practical for IT departments. Limitation: Available only in English; does not address the realities of German businesses or specific industries such as automotive or manufacturing.

AI meets networking expertise, globally recognized
Cisco has set a goal of training one million people worldwide in AI. The result: an extensive course library on the Networking Academy platform that combines the fundamentals of AI with networking and cybersecurity topics.
The “Introduction to AI” course lasts six hours, is available in German, and concludes with a Cisco badge that can be shared on LinkedIn. Advanced courses on “AI Foundations” last up to 30 hours and cover machine learning, natural language processing, and AI ethics. For those looking to get started with data analysis using Python, this is one of the best free options available. All content is in English. The platform is ideal for tech-savvy employees in procurement, operations, or controlling who want to understand AI-driven data analysis without being computer scientists.

The only major German-language AI learning platform
The AI Campus is the top recommendation for companies in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland looking to provide further training for their teams in German. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, it boasts over 130,000 registered learners and more than 100 courses available entirely in German.
What sets it apart: The AI Campus offers industry-specific AI training. There are dedicated learning paths for medicine and nursing, administration, education, and engineering. In other words, the focus is not on abstract AI concepts, but on AI in specific professional contexts. Courses range from two to forty hours in length, and all conclude with a free certificate.
Academically rigorous yet written in accessible language: The AI Campus collaborates with German universities and research institutions. If you’re looking for a verifiable, certified foundational AI education in German, this is the best option available.
Strengths: The only major German platform, academically grounded, industry-specific learning paths, completely free thanks to BMBF funding, certificates at no additional cost.

Coursera and OpenHPI:
University-level courses available for free
Coursera offers free access to courses from Stanford, Google, IBM, and others through its audit mode. In audit mode, all video lectures and course materials are available for free; only graded assignments and the official certificate require payment. Recommended for AI fundamentals: “Machine Learning Specialization” (Stanford/Andrew Ng), “AI For Everyone” (deeplearning.ai), and “Applied AI with DeepLearning” (IBM).
OpenHPI, the platform of the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, offers university-level MOOCs in German. Courses last four to six weeks, conclude with a certificate, and are completely free of charge. Current AI courses cover machine learning, deep learning, and the societal implications of AI. OpenHPI is particularly well-suited for executives seeking a solid understanding without delving into technical details.

Why AI training is now mandatory
Article 4 of the EU AI Act has been in force since February 2025. It requires all providers and operators of AI systems to ensure that their employees have sufficient AI literacy. This applies not only to AI developers, but to everyone who uses AI systems within the company.

Using AI safely and effectively in your own processes. This is where free courses often fall short because they lack a practical, business-oriented focus.
To document compliance with the AI training requirement, we recommend: collecting certificates from the courses listed above, filing them in personnel records, and supplementing them with company-specific training documentation. Free courses effectively cover Competency 1. Competency 3—the practical application in one’s own context—typically requires hands-on guidance.

When are free courses no longer enough?
Free courses are ideal for learning the basics. To implement these concepts in your own company, you need hands-on guidance.
A structured intermediate step: The German-language online course “Claude Basics” (249 EUR, with certificate) guides participants through practical Claude applications using real-world work tasks in 32 micro-lessons, including an overview of the GDPR and AVV.
Free courses are a great way to get started. They explain concepts, demonstrate possibilities, and provide an initial certificate. But having supported more than 30 corporate transformations, we have identified four recurring gaps:
Gap 1
No connection to your processes
Whether it’s procurement, sales, or project management: Generic AI courses showcase examples from Silicon Valley, not from Germany’s mid-sized manufacturing sector. What’s missing is an answer to the question: “How exactly do we apply this to our material planning?”
Gap 2
No hands-on implementation with your tech stack
If you use Smartsheet, SAP, or your own ERP system, you need AI expertise tailored to those specific systems. Free courses cover generic tools, not the path from your current situation to a successful AI integration.
Gap 3
No change management, no team adoption
AI tools rarely fail because of the technology itself. They fail because teams don’t adopt them. How do you introduce an AI tool to a department without encountering resistance? That’s a leadership challenge, not a learning objective for an online course.
Gap 4
No follow-up support, no coaching
A course ends with the final module. True transformation requires someone who, after four weeks, asks: “What worked, and what’s holding you back?” Free courses lack a support structure.
